I found this fair-condition softcover, as well as Volume 2, at a local Savers thrift shop, and decided to give it a try.
It's a handsomely-drawn and very lively story about a group of Unstoppable Mailmen in a world full of warring factions and an amazing variety of deadly monsters. (It's vaguely reminiscent of Tegami Bachi, though this series seems to be focused more on individual missions than on overarching plots.)
The first volume opens with Banya making his way through a crowded battlefield to deliver a message to the lord in the beseiged fort - and his arrival awes the man so much that he's commissioned to take another message back, despite his hilarious summing up of the various charges involved. (That's a running gag, the fee-scale recitation.) Some of the battle scenes are really exquisite - and grisly - with the artwork overall being quite impressive.
Other stories show how Banya met his two cronies in the delivery business, and reveal some of the hazards they face: including, near the end of the volume, something very like a gigantic Dune sandworm. So, yeah, these kids earn their fees...
