I'm claiming this from the Indigenous Peoples bookbox. It's by a Canadian author with Cherokee heritage, and opens in delightfully surreal fashion, with a first-person narrator talking about the beginning, and Coyote - who is sleeping - and one of Coyote's dreams, which gets loose...

A brief section introduces a couple of apparently-human characters with their own issues, squabbling about their plans.

Then we meet four characters called the Lone Ranger, Ishmael, Hawkeye, and Robinson Crusoe, who are bickering about whose turn it is to tell a tale...

So, yeah, not your typical narrative! As the story develops, we find that the four literary-themed guys are extremely aged native men who have - again - escaped from the rest home where they usually reside. Come to find out they've been there for much, much longer than anyone has a right to expect. Where they're going and why - well, it takes a while to figure that out. Meanwhile the regular folk try to manage their love lives, social issues, government intervention, and other workaday bits, while being part of a much larger story.
