One of the best books that I ever have read!!!

It has so many layers!

Most importantly, but not obviously, it gives symbolic view of the fallacy of HUMAN SUPREMACY and PATRIARCHY, disguised as RELIGIOUS orders/oppression. (no further spoilers!)

Secondly, it is important to me personally because it gives the historical insight into DUTcH and JAPANESE involvement in the 18th century, on the island of Deshima in/near Nagasaki.

I was fortunate enough to read this book *just before* my trip to Japan in 2015, and we have visited Deshima (now a museum) for half-a-day, enjoying the revelations from this book.

Thirdly, it describes the conflict and contact between two "different" cultures - West and East, Christian and Animistic - that turn out to not be that different, when confronted with human passions: love, greed, power.

I got this copy from my colleague Fergal - thanks! After Arnd have read it too, I am passing it
on to the next fortunate person: please enjoy, and share, and "pay it forward" - pass it on!
