I read and enjoyed (is that the right word?!) the book a few years ago so I shall pass it to a friend in the village before releasing it into the wild. The book taught me a few things, including the word for a washer of dishes, in French: plongeur (dans un restaurante)!

Orwell's memoir from the 1940s seems a million miles from Uig in the 2010s. However, it's a sobering fact that homelessness and dire poverty still exist all over the UK, even in the Western Isles.
