From the back cover:

"It is 1948, and England is recovering from a war. But at 21 Nevern Street, London, the conflict has only just begun.

Queenie Bligh's neighbours do not approve when she agrees to take in Jamaican lodgers, but with her husband, Bernard, not back from the war, what else can she do?

Small Island explores a point in England's past when the country began to change. In this delicately wrought and profoundly moving novel, Andrea Levy handles the weighty themes of empire, prejudice, war and love, with a superb lightness of touch and generosity of spirit."

I've been meaning to read this book for years, and at the urging of a friend have finally got round to it.

Sometimes a book that has been rated so highly makes you wonder what all the fuss was about when you finally read it, but I loved this! The characters with all their different traits and flaws were brought marvellously to life, and the heartache and confusion of the Jamaicans coming to England and finding something so different to what they had expected was really moving. I also loved the way the story was told, with the end of the book not being that much farther forward in time than the beginning, as the narrative kept looping back to describe how the various characters had come to be as they were when the story opens.

Chosen as my book to swap from the 'Read it, swap it, leave it' bookring. I will be passing it on to my cousin when I next see her, as I know it's a book she has been wanting to read for a while.
