This is an interesting wee book. It is about the unlikely relationship between a young man who seems obsessed with the effects on people of observing death and a 79 year old woman who's philosophy is to make the most of every moment of life. It's quite manic in places. My favourite character was actually Sunshine, Harold's third date, as I like the way she deals with his nonsense.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Set free at the old gang meet up. Happy reading!
Thanks for bringing along - been years since I have seen the film so it'll be nice to read the novel too.

What a delightful wee novel - very witty and life affirming in a way (even though death features a lot) Really must see if I can find the film again somewhere on Netflix or Amazon.
Was also taken back to my school days in Germany as this was a Reclam school edition with English/German vocabulary at the bottom of each page and I had English in my A-Levels (many many years ago) so used to read a lot of Reclam books in school.

The book arrived with several others from England some time ago and I forgot to journal it. Sorry for that!
I'm not sure if I'll read it, but it's my aunt's most favourite movie... maybe I should give it a try.

Oh look, it's a book from Arvores! All the best wishes!! :D
When I finally managed to see the movie, at the ripe old age of thirtysomething, it became an instant favourite. So the book to this film cannot possibly be bad. In fact, it's about the next best thing if you don't have the film at hand or your DVD player is broken.
Although books written after movies are rarely high literature (and more often outright crap), this is actually the book written before the movie, i.e. the screenplay, and apparently the author's MFA thesis. I do hope he got top marks on this!
As this was written before the movie came into existence, there are actually some scenes here that never made it into the film; Glaucus the sculptor has a larger role, and the song Maude teaches Harold isn't If you want to sing out, sing out -- plus the added bonus that one has all the time in the world to savour the dialogue.
Oh so true and very beautiful, if probably not as great if you haven't got the movie to playback in your head while you read.
