In the early 20th century, Elnora lives in the country with her mother, next to Indiana's Limberlost swamp. When she starts high school in town, she doesn't fit in...and she discovers an urgent need for cash to pay for tuition, books, clothes, etc.
Fortunately for her, Elnora discovers that her beloved Limberlost holds the solution to her money woes, and eventually much more.
Apparently the author was a naturalist who lived near the real Limberlost and wanted to share her love of nature through her books.
I counted this book as my 2016 Indiana read for NancyNova's 2015-2016 50 States reading challenge.
Also, it was nice to discover that work is being done to restore the Limberlost (and there's some good info about other Indiana books at that site, too).
