Bats of the Republic: An Illuminated Novel

I got this splendidly handsome hardcover from friends for Christmas. It looks to be a surreal, time-travel/alternate-history/apocalyptic novel themed on bats (among other things). It's wonderfully produced, with a lovely dust jacket laden with detail - and with a completely different set of information, some of it mirror-image, on the inside of the jacket! Even the endpapers are stunning, with rows of bats in different attitudes. (You can see images from the book on the author's web site here.)
Later: I enjoyed the intertwined stories here, one from the past, one from a dystopic future; at times I had to double-check the page headings to be sure where and when I was, but overall the story-strands stood out well enough. Yes, it got confusing here and there, and I found the conclusion a wee bit underwhelming after all the glorious artwork, but I'm still glad I got to read this handsome and unusual book.

I'm sending this to BCer HI77 in Florida to fill a wish. Enjoy!
