A respected journalist is found dead in a pond near a vacant house. The police seem to have written it off as an accidental drowning. The family is not pleased with the hap hazard investigation so they hire V.I. Warshawski to check it out. After extensive investigation, V.I. finds the journalist has been murdered. The only lead she has are notes he has made on a story he was writing. This leads to a well to do publishing family and their involvement in the blacklist during the 1950s. How and why this is so important is at the top of V.I.'s list of things to find out. Before the investigation is over, two more murders and several family secrets will come to light.
