One frozen January morning, Inspector Kurt Wallander responds to what he believes is a routine call-out. When he reaches the isolated farmhouse he discovers a bloodbath. An old man has been beaten to death, his wife lies barely alive beside his shattered body, both victims of a violence beyond reason. The woman supplies Wallander with his only clue: the perpetrators may have been foreign. When this is leaked to the press, it unleashes a tide of racism. Wallander's life is a shambles: his wife has left him, his daughter refuses to speak to him and even his ageing father barely tolerates him. He works tirelessly, eats badly and drinks his nights away. But now, with winter tightening and his activities being monitored by a tough-minded district attorney, Wallander must forget his troubles and throw himself into a battle against time and against mounting racial hatred.

Situated in 1990, when refugees from Iran, Somalia and Rumania, etc found their way to Sweden. Police investigations are soon complicated by rumours that refugees and/or asylum seekers from nearby reception centres could be implicated. An old police procedural amidst political turmoil which could easily have been written this year. What has Europe learned since then?

Taking to the 2017 convention for the book buffet. I know he's Swedish but it's still scandi-noir

I read this book a long time ago in German and I think it's still a very good crime novel.
I might give it to our American catsitters when we return home tomorrow night.
(By the way, it was nice meeting you, team read member!)
