After the death of his wife, the narrator is driven to go back and confront his past. Going back to the village where he spent his childhood holidays he relives the summer when his childish lust for Mrs Grace was replaced by love for her daughter. With its beautifully vivid lyrical descriptions it is easy to see why this book won the Man Booker Prize.
