The Vampire Lestat (The Vampire Chronicles, Book II)

Rice's take on vampires remains an intersting, and popular, one. Unfortuantely, I'm not writing this immediately after the first time I read this book. Instead, it comes after I've read many of her later attempts, which have served to illuminate the gross deficiencies in her writing style and expose her vampires, especially Lestat who is her favorite, as less than fully-fleshed characters.
The best character in the entire Vampire Chronicles is Claudia, the vampire child. The only volume in which she appears is volume one. There are so many interesting issues that Rice could have explored with Claudia, but chose not to, only to retread many tired vampire themes: the beauty of experiencing vampire senses, the loneliness for mortality, exhiliration of the kill, blah blah blah. It's sad that she didn't stick with Claudia, at least for a while longer.
Only the beginning trilogy of the Vapire Chronicles is worth your time. The first, Interview with the Vampire, is the second-best, because of Claudia's presence. The second, The Vampire Lestat, is the weakest of the three, but still worth reading. The third, The Queen of the Damned, is the best becasue it has the largest scope of the books and explains the mythology of Rice's vampires. Sadly, the movie made from the third book left out all of the interesting material about how vapires came about. The movie is a sorry mess.
If you like vampires, but prefer more red-blooded (sorry, pun intended) vampires, read Brian Lumley's Necroscope books, especially those set in the alternate vampire world of Sunside/Starside. These include the Blood Brothers trilogy and Necroscope III: The Source.
This copy has the older, simpler, cover art, which I prefer.

I went hunting for this one last Thursday (actually I sent a friend who works in Brentwood not far from The Bookhouse!) I plan to read & release. I'll check back in when I've read it!
Edited 5/2015 - IDK where the ebay release notes came from, as this lot of 3 books was released (and journalled as such - I tracked them down as a wild release!) at The Book House (a book store) in their "FREE" basket.

After 6 years, and 3 moves, I've decided I'm not getting around to this series. Will be wild released very soon.
"Soon" is relative, huh? An additional 7 years later (for a total of 13 years in my possession!), it's finally in the wild again - left it atop the ice cooler outside.
