I was given a copy of this book when it was published. I joined the Underground in 1990 (the Northern line Centenary) and worked on the Northern line for my first and second placements. I found this in a charity shop in Walthamstow.

Thank you so much for this surprise RABCK! I really love history. I find I get a lot more out of books like this when I am familiar with the places being described. I look forward to reading this one. Then I'll find it an exciting new home.
This book wasn't on my radar for reading at all, but being as a fellow bookcrosser sent it to me, I had to give it a go. I'm so glad I did! What we have here is a summary of the first 100 years of the Northern Line of London's Underground. Not enough depth on some things that interested me, so I will have to see what else I can find out from other sources.
I have driven trains on the Northern Line for almost 13 & a half years. Over the years I have picked up bit and pieces of the lines history. This book pretty much confirmed the things I already knew, as well as adding to it. Lots of interesting pictures and diagrams.
I found it sad reading about the extension plans that didn't materialise and fascinated with the plans for the future. Which is where I'm living now as this book was published in 1990. Of course, I have insiders knowledge of where things are going in the future too...

Loaned this to my transport mad neighbour. He will most likely happily devour it pretty quick, then want to quiz me about it for weeks after... things I do to make people happy lol. When he returns it, I shall find it another home.
My very excited and happy neighbour returned it to me (thankfully on my way to work, so I didn't have to do an in depth analysis of it with him). He loved all the history and pictures. I shall do my best to find it another (hopefully temporary home) soon!
This 'Brucey Bonus' is off to visit a fellow bookcrosser.
I know this isn't on your wish list, it I hope you don't mind getting it and enjoy it anyway. This is the history of the line I work on and the trains I drive. I found it fascinating.

Many thanks for this bonus book. Despite working on the trains this would not be something that I would normally pick up but will definitely give it a go.
Despite working on trains I actually have little interest in them other than a means of getting from A to B. However, I have also been interested in history and in particular social history so when I was very generously given this book I decided to give it a whirl.
The book was first published in 1990 so is somewhat out of date now and the level of detail within is more suited to an enthusiast rather than the casual reader, it is still an interesting read.

Going out as a RABCK. I hope that you have not already read it. Enjoy!
Thanks for this surprise. At last I have in my hands a railway book that is also a Bookcrossing book! I can read it without feeling guilty if I can get it out of Mrs D's hands. My Dad will probably want to read it too.
An enjoyable read. I was particularly interested in the section on the war years. It was also fascinating to read that in 1907 how the northward extension of the line from Golders Green "only by the demolition of a number of new houses and cutting of some roads". That's still happening today with the proposals for HS2. There's nothing new is there?

Passing this on to my non-Bookcrossing dad, when we visit my parents for an early Mothers Day treat. He probably won't journal it but if I can get it back I will pass it on again.
I was right. Dad didn't journal this book but he did enjoy it. Time to pass it on.
Thank you so much for the RABCK! I'm looking forward to reading this little book.
I really enjoyed this little book, and learnt a number of things about the Northern Line I hadn't known before. I found the way that the arrival of the tube resulted in areas being developed interesting as I've always been a bit sceptical about new and upgraded stations bringing other investment into the surrounding area. As others have said, it was first published in 1990, so the later chapters are a bit dated and, obviously, it lacks the many developments that have happened since then. Overall, a good read.
