I was actually at the little free library near where I live to pick up a different BC wild release, and saw this one there on the shelf. I snagged it and took it home - not knowing it was also a BC book until I opened the cover. Surprise!

I've heard about this book, but hadn't picked it up yet. Interested to read it.

So here's the thing about memoirs/non-fiction - in my experience, most authors seem to have a really interesting story to share in a mediocre way, or they have a mediocre story that they are able to share in a really interesting way. Bonus points if they can tell a really interesting story in a really interesting way, of course. In this case, the author could possibly have had an interesting story --only it turns out it wasn't --and she wasn't able to tell it in an interesting way. Double whammy.

The premise of this book had promise - but it just fell completely flat for me. The author is such a boring writer, and there were almost no original ideas interspersed with the plethora of various and random citations from other research and literary work. I felt like I was reading a really boring textbook.

It should also be noted that this was ONE person's journey to becoming happier, so of course that journey will differ from person to person. It just happens that the tactics she employed were not remotely interesting to me, as I don't have a husband or children - which both play heavily in her goals. I also couldn't relate to someone who lives on the upper east side in Manhattan, which created a further disconnect.

This book just wasn't for me, but perhaps others will enjoy it. I'll hang onto it and release it somewhere soon.
