Lyme Regis in the early 1800's. A fictionalised telling of the story of the finding of fossils which changed the way scientists viewed the timescale of the world and the involvement of the woman who was sidelined in a world run by men. Very enjoyable.

Having previously read Girl with a Pearl Earring some years ago I knew that I was in for a treat... I was not disappointed. This is a lovely book and a great read. Based on the lives of real people who lived in early 19th Century Lyme Regis it tells the story of one of the world's first fossil hunters, Mary Anning.
Tracy Chevalier captures the period and the setting perfectly and provides a splendid stage for her wonderful cast of historical characters.

Hugely enjoyable,full of women trying not to be marginalised, ignored or taken advantage of. Would highly recommend this lively story full of lively characters.
