From the back of the book: 'Fifty years after Independence from British rule, the Democratic Republic of Amnesia, a tropical island-nation located midway between Australia and Asia, has come to terms with its imperial past. Amnesia's state of mind is symbolised by the famous New Imperial Hotel, a 5-star hostelry for the international elite which combines old colonial ambience with the last word in high-tech luxury. Through the new Imperial's spacious lobby pass armies of new buccaneers, travel itineraries in their hands, lap-tops in their luggage - and conquest on their minds.

At the heart of the novel - and of the New Imperial Hotel itself- is the story of the Hotel's first resident, a British civil servant on his first overseas posting, whose relationship with a passionate local poet is a tantalising mystery to which four of the novel's characters unwittingly hold some of the answers.'

Don't be put off with the first section, which I found not very interesting. It lays ground work and is much more comprehensible as part of the whole by the end of the book.

Picked up at meetup.

It was different from what I'd expected. It has four stories from different characters' points of view, all of them being foreigners except for the last one. None of the stories really seem to go anywhere.

Picked up as an orphan at this month's bookcrossing meetup.
I don't think it's really me so I'll find somewhere to re-release
