When K-i-s-m-e-t introduced this book to us at our recent BookCrossing meet-up, she warned that not only was this a self-published book, but also that the author sold it door to door. So how good could it possibly be, right? And yet it intrigued me.

I read this book over a weekend in December. It was -30C outside my living room window, the snow deep and the wind howling. So the ambiance was set for my reading adventure. I was warmly ensconced in a quilt on my couch, coffee and snacks at hand. Bernie Howgate, having gathered up all manner of pile-lined clothes, camping gear and freeze-dried food was hunkered down in Red Bay, Labrador ready to start his adventure. It was January. It was -32C. He was holed up in an emergency shelter and hadn't moved in three days. He'd woken up the last four mornings to blizzard warnings broadcast by the C.B.C. He was about to start off on an 800 mile trek from Red Bay to Goose Bay. Alone. On foot. In the winter. And he does it. The first half of the book describes his winter journey. No dog sled for Bernie. No snowmobile or truck or ATV. Just a pair of snowshoes and his wits.

The second half of the book details his summer journey around Labrador from Goose Bay to Nain. Again alone but this time in the ocean. By kayak. A kayak he has just bought. He is not a seasoned kayaker. It's his first trip in it. Not an afternoon jaunt or even an overnighter. Three months in this thing on the ocean!

To say that Bernie's was an insanely epic or epically insane adventure would be an understatement. To say that Bernie Howgate is next in line for the Pulitzer Prize for literature would be a gross exaggeration. But this was a very entertaining story told with a great deal of story telling if not literary skill. A good editor would probably help because at times I didn't get what the author was trying to say with his wink, wink, nudge, nudge innuendo. And even though the book was set out in chronological order, I sometimes didn't know where we were or how we got there.

Still the book is one hoot of an amazing adventure and if ever Mr. Howgate showed up at my door peddling his books ( he has written others of his global travels), I'd haul him in, probably feed and water him, and even though I'd probably have to fumigate my house because he hadn't bathed in a hundred days, get him to talking. And I'd buy his book.
