I take this book less as a self help book, but an interesting memoir of the puppeteer who plays big bird, and who was there at the start of the Muppets. I only learned recently, during a trip to the puppet museum in Atlanta, that Big Bird was played by someone with his uplifted arm above his head for the bird's head. Just that thought makes me feel it's not easy being yellow! There are many interesting anecdotes throughout the book that makes for an entertaining read.

From the Book Buffet table in Oslo. Not too long ago, we watched a fascinating documentary on Caroll Spinney. I am looking forward to reading this book, as creative processes are very interesting. What works? What doesn't? How to overcome challenges, how to remain "fresh" year after year. The physical work that goes into the character(s) is never felt by the viewer, and that is true art. 'So nice to see you again, Azuki. 'Hope you will come up to Toronto again soon.
I love how this book has travelled from the US to Norway to Canada! Hi Azuki!!
I actually read this one as part of a bookring many years ago and loved it. And the film that Bookgirrl mentioned, about Caroll Spinney (aka, Big Bird!), was so excellent. Spinney and his wife were in attendance when it first played at TIFFand did a Q&A after the film. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house, even though we were laughing a lot. I have some great photos of that Q&A session but don't know how to include them in a journal note. Anyhow, I may have a nostalgic reread before moving this book along again. Thanks!

Nice to see you both at the meetup yesterday and hi Azuki!!
Picked this up as it looks like a good and short read. Thanks!

Caroll Spinney is the man behind (or in?) Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. This novel is presented as life lessons learned from being Big Bird, but it's really a short look at how Spinney became Big Bird and the adventures he had as him. Sesame Street was a big part of my childhood. I watched it fairly frequently, enjoyed the muppets, and even had my own little version of Big Bird at home. This path down memory lane for Spinney was enjoyable to read as a grown up fan.
It gives you a bit of insight in to how Sesame Street was produced, how they came up with their characters, and how they hired new talent. I didn't learn any lessons or really have any wisdom imparted on me, but the story that Spinney told was interesting. I wish Spinney had spoken a bit more about his wife. It's obvious that he is deeply in love with her and we only got a few pages on how they met and got engaged in a quick period of time.
More detail could have been provided in many parts of this book, but it was a good overview of the man behind Big Bird.

Delightful story of Big Bird the Muppet and Caroll Spinney the Puppeteer. Many of the adventures of Big Bird from his trip to China, the White House, orchestras, I knew little about. A light read, that I would recommend
