Interesting and full of twists and turns but ultimately a bit disappointing. The ending felt somewhat contrived, but it was the chapters set in 2000 that felt ... wrong. Francesca is amazed that a mother of one of Carla's school friends has her own car. Carla is bullied for not having a father, and for being Italian. I'm sure that even way back in 2000, Clapham was ethnically diverse enough that an Italian girl would not have been so unusual? There are other things like this that jar, and unfortunately it meant that I was reading to spot (what I perceived as) anomalies, rather than for the story.
