This was a very interesting collection of stories, with nice prefaces explaining some of the context of each tale to readers (like myself) who are white and unfamiliar with some aspects. The organization of the stories could possibly be tighter, since the transitions are a bit rough at times. It worked better for me to read a tale, set the book down to digest, then pick the next story up, rather than trying to read a string of them.
Some of my favorites were:
"As it was in the Beginning" by F. Pauline Johnson pairs an evocative and vivid picture of a woman trapped between her birth culture and one she is trying to fit into with a writing style that plainly shows the turn-of-the-century era.
"Grace" by Vicki L. Sears is a tale that will kick you in the gut, illustrating a pair of siblings who have circulated through foster homes before finally coming to a home that they may be able trust.
Leslie Marmon Silko's "Yellow Woman" is best paired with the traditional Pueblo tales that preface it so readers who aren't familiar with this cast of characters can see more of the inversions and tropes played with here.
Anna Lee Walters creates strong, familiar-feeling characters in "The Warriors" and the family dynamics create the bulk of the tension.
