"Hi! My name is Nao, and I am a time being. Do you know what a time being is? Well, if you give me a moment, I will tell you."

On a remote island in the Pacific Northwest, a Hello Kitty lunchbox washes up on the beach. Tucked inside is the diary of a sixteen-year-old Japanese girl named Nao Yasutani. Ruth - the writer who finds the lunchbox - suspects that it is a debris from Japan's 2011 tsunami. Once she begins to read the diary, Ruth quickly finds herself drawn into the mystery of Nao's fate.

Meanwhile in Tokyo, Nao, uprooted from her Californian home, bullied at school, and helplessly watching her parents spiral deeper into disaster, has decided to end her life. But nevertheless she is determined, before she commits that final act, to write down the story of her great-grandmother, a Buddhist nun who is over 100 years old.

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award

I totally love this book from the beginning to end. So far it's one of my best read of the year.

An unusual tale, the diary of school-girl Naoko intertwined with the life of Ruth the moment Ruth picked it up from the beach. The two lives reaching across time and space, touching upon each other. Concepts of quantum physics dancing with zen buddhism. Harsh reality of living meshing with ghosts and dreams. All come together, under Ozeki's skillful hands, into a harmonious and unique blend of a tale.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I picked this up at the library book sale. This is my second copy, I used it for my BookObsessed swap, but I love the book so much, so when I noticed that Tsjara has it on her wishlist I want to send her a copy too.

It's not a quick read, in fact it can be a painful read, for the story content. But I assure you, it is worth your time. Just like Jacob de Zoet! This is an excellent, excellent tale.

This arrived a little while back, when I realised I forgot to make a JE.. oops! Thanks so much for the wishlistbooks and the cute emoji hanger! :D

Edit: still got bit of a trauma from Jacob de Zoet (though it was very good) :p
