I found this fair-condition softcover at a local thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy. (I've enjoyed the anime series on TV.)

The story opens with a young woman battling the half-demon Inu-Yasha over a magical jewel; she manages to defeat him, pinning him to a tree with her arrow, before dying herself - but with her last breath she says she's taking the jewel with her to the world beyond. Cut to modern times, where high school girl Kagome learns a bit about the jewel from her grandfather, who runs a shrine (and souvenir shop) near a sacred tree and an ancient well. Nothing weird could happen here, right? Right. She goes down into the cellar to retrieve some supplies and is grabbed by a horrifying spirit that's after the jewel. It drags her down into the old well, and when she climbs out she's in another time - where there's a young fellow with pointed ears and long white hair pinned to a tree by an arrow...

Unexpectedly, she does NOT immediately free him; instead she's captured by the locals, who guard the spot. An old woman says she looks just like her dead sister, the one who trapped the demon - but then the skeletal-centipede-well-spirit turns up again and Kagome has to flee. Apparently her very presence in this time is enough to waken Inu-Yasha, and once he's freed he destroys the other demon easily - but not before it bit Kagome and tore the true Sharkon jewel from inside her. [This is a surprisingly bloody series sometimes.] Kagome retrieves it, but Inu-Yasha wants it back, and is happy to kill to get it...

Luckily, the old woman from the village has a necklace of binding and manages to get it onto Inu-Yasha, after which Kagome can command him. ("Sit!" Appropriate for a dog-demon, eh?) Kagome just wants to get home, while Inu-Yasha tries to tell her that as long as she has the jewel she'll be the target of demons and humans craving its power; sure enough, she ignores him and wanders off, and gets captured.

By the end of this volume, the jewel's been broken into many, many shards, creating a bit of a problem for those who want it - including Inu-Yasha. A new demon appears, wielding fine hair as a deadly weapon; Kagome manages to get home again, but will the evil follow her? Lots of action for a first volume!

[There's an extensive TV Tropes page on the manga and anime, but beware of spoilers.]
