THE QUAKING CONFUSION OF ENGLAND IN 1939
The First World War, eighteen years in insurance, and marriage to the joyless Hilda have been no more than death in life to George Bowling.
This and fear of another war take his mind back to the peace of his childhood in a small country town.
But his return journey to Lower Binfield brings complete disillusionment, and once again he settles into the ooze of routine and frustration with the shadow of Nineteen Eighty-Four looming up in the distance.

About the author:
George Orwell (whose real name was Eric Blair) was born in India in 1903, and was educated at Eton. From 1922 to 1928 he served in Burma in the Indian Imperial Police. For the next two years he lived in Paris, and then came to England as a school-teacher. Later he worked in a book-shop. In 1937 he went to Spain to fight for the Republicans and was wounded. During the Second World War he was a member of the Home Guard and worked for the B.B.C. In 1943 he joined the staff of Tribune, contributing a regular page of political and literary commentary, As I Please. He later became a regular contributor to the Observer, for which newspaper he went as a special correspondent to France and Germany. He died in London in 1950.
His publications include Down and Out in London and Paris, Burmese Days, The Road to Wigan Pier, Coming up for Air, Keep the Aspidistra Flying, Homage to Catalonia, and Inside the Whale. Orwell's name became widely known with the publication, in 1945, of Animal Farm, which has sold more than a million copies. Nineteen Eighty-Four had a similar success, and aroused extraordinary interest as a film and on television.

Thank you Tarna. Tack. Kiitos The book was in my postbox today. Thanks too for the lovely card and the bookmark, so nice, I've read 1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell and liked them so I really look forward to read this book. I think he is a good writer.

Edit 18 Januari 2017: It is a casual and low-key story where George Bowling thinks back to his childhood and his two years older brother. George loved to fish and read. It is this time George looks back to where he is now in his forties with false teeth and big belly examines himself in the mirror. He thinks about his girlfriend before the war, and in his meeting with his current wife. Then he decides to secretly visit his hometown and seek pond where the big fish was as long ago but his experience is not as he intended. Time has not stood still. Before he goes from there something bad happens. I think the book accurately describes events and thoughts that many had at the time.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Kram.

'Coming Up for Air' is effectively a social document echoing many of Orwell’s socialist views as seen in earlier novels like 'The Road to Wigan Pier'.

George is a likeable if highly flawed character whereas the female characters are strictly two-dimensional but this shouldn't really detract from this book. Orwell uses irony to portray how the effects of an earlier war has changed society but also reminds us that actions have consequences in our personal lives as well and no matter how much we wish it, it is impossible to turn back the clock. Similarly he reminds us that the future is largely out of our control and instead we should make the most of the present. Whilst this book may not be of the same calibre as his more famous books, Animal Farm and 1984, it does how forward thinking much of his writing was and shows that many Orwellian themes and ideas are still applicable today, as such I feel that it still deserves to be read.
