I found this classic in napper's travel bookbox. I've always meant to read more Steinbeck, but have never gotten around to it. Here's my big chance! Thanks, morpha. In its place I'll leave The Happy Isles of Oceania, a book by Paul Theroux that I quite enjoyed.

At left, the book is hanging out with a fine specimen of Stropharia rugosoannulata I found in the wood chips at my son's playground. My husband is frying some up for breakfast as I type.

A nice, quiet book in which Steinbeck travels America with his standard poodle, Charley. Charley seems to be an unusually insightful dog, who says fft! when nature calls, and who, like Steinbeck himself, is introverted and dignified. This is not a travel guide nor a report of an organized expedition. It's a series of encounters and musings, which circuitously shed some light on the American character. Steinbeck concludes that there really is such a thing. The book dates from the early 60s, before I was born. It's very easy to read and enjoy.
