I got this good-condition ex-library hardcover from an online seller. It's a beautifully-illustrated book describing the life cycle of the marbled murrelet, a small seabird from the Pacific northwest. Intriguingly, its habit of nesting in tall, old-growth trees wasn't verified until 1974 (!) - but, alas, that habit has also made it vulnerable, as so many such forests are being logged.
One reason why the nesting locations weren't obvious - other than that the nests tended to be very high up, as in several hundred feet above ground! - is that the murrelets spend most of their lives on the ocean, floating on the waves and diving for fish. Not what one would imagine as a forest-nesting bird...
The illustrations really are lovely, and reveal many other creatures that spend time in the treetops while showing the tending and hatching of the single egg typical of this bird. I hadn't known about this one before - fascinating!
