I got this fair-condition hardcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It's a very convoluted tale of time-travel and alternate realities - and a time loop that may result in the collapse of reality itself if the characters at the heart of it can't find a way to set things right. The trigger for all this? One man's attempt to save the ship Titanic - he knows enough about it that he thinks that a gift of decent binoculars to the man on watch that fateful night would be enough to prevent the sinking, and by saving so many key figures in business and politics, might affect the future...

Oh, and does it ever! The speculation as to just how these small changes might turn out is quite intriguing, with a kicker of a nasty little surprise early on and some bigger ones down the line. But once we get into the main plot, where there are characters in 1912 and in modern times all vying to get to the time machine and go put right what was set wrong, things get wildly confusing and, for me, much less interesting. I admit to skimming a good deal before dipping in near the end to see how things turned out, and I found that I enjoyed the first and last fifths of the book very much {wry grin}. My apologies to the author for finding the middle bit unnecessary!
