I found this fair-condition paperback at a local Salvation Army thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy.
I was originally drawn to the cover images of mysterious caves with monstrous skeletal remains inside. Turns out that this is a wee bit misleading - the cover-pic shows something like a dragon or dinosaur, and that's not at all what we get - but I enjoyed the book anyway, as it managed to ramp up the suspense via a couple of very different main characters and an interesting spin on a supernatural threat. Some of the early scenes of the emergence of the... I'll just say "monster" to avoid giving too much away as to its nature - are very creepy indeed, and later incidents range from awe-inspiring to gruesome (and sometimes both).
I did find some aspects of the story a bit unconvincing, but for the most part it was fast-moving and entertaining. In the right hands it could make a really dandy film.
