I'm re-cycling this old BCID to hold reviews of the Pocket Penguin 60's...of which there appears to be 2 series, and childrens and look-alike imitators, so this could end up quite a log!

I'll start with a couple from the archive:

Will Self - Scale

Jan Morris - From the Four Corners

Journal Entry 2 by BookGroupMan from Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom on Thursday, October 25, 2007
Margaret Visser - More Then Meets the Eye

24/10/07 - I've not heard of this intelligent food writer before, but i'm liking this 80+ page sampler; some essays on the history and lore of common foods, and a brilliant all-you-need-to-know-about-chickens-but-were-afraid-to-ask. As an owner and chicken fancier (ahem!) I found this fascinating!

Journal Entry 3 by BookGroupMan from Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom on Sunday, December 23, 2007
Georges Simenon - Death of a Nobody

Two short stories by the most famous Belgium author; the intelligent and 'growling' Maigret and his sidekick Lucas, stalking the mean streets of Paris during the 30's and 40's. A feeling of a noir Morse & Lewis?

Journal Entry 4 by BookGroupMan from Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 3, 2008
Stephen Jay Gould - Adam's Navel

1/09 - Here are 3 short essays about evolution and about the statistics of cancer! Gould is obviously a very good scientist, erudite and well-informed, but a bit dull I think? The one interesting thing was some new words – what a geek I am!

Omphalus, Lamarckism, prochronic & diachronic…not that I can explain what they mean!

15 years after the earlier journal entries I've acquired another little Penguin '60s', the short story The Dead from Joyce's Dubliners, no.28 from the UK Orange set ... who knew there were so many!
