I found this fair-condition hardcover on the charity-sale shelves at a local Hannaford's. I've enjoyed some of Michaels' other books, but hadn't come across this one before. Its main character, Rachel, has a deep interest in the history of textile crafts, with an eye towards revealing more about the often-left-out history of the women who did most of such work. While working at a vintage clothing shop, a startling encounter with a burglar leaves Rachel and her hosts with three vintage quilts of amazing craftsmanship - but one of them seems to have a (literally) haunting secret...

The story has a fair amount of suspense, but it's relatively low-key throughout, with dawning romantic interests brewing here and there. The characters are varied and well-drawn, and some of the dialogue is delightfully academic - the kind of let's-explore-our-respective-fields-of-study-in-detail discussions that I love to have with close friends. There are hints that Rachel is under the influence of some baleful spirit, but the actual instances are few and far between, and her situation is accurately diagnosed fairly early on by a professor with a background in folklore. (His own story hints at an elaborate and traumatic back-story, which I find was featured in Michaels' previous "Georgetown" novels, Ammie, Come Home and Shattered Silk. I could follow this story without having read those, but I suspect it would be more fun to read them in order.)

There are lighter moments here and there, mixed with tranquil scenes of someone basking in their favorite studies while having a lapful of cats - and some scenes of serious anguish: Rachel begins the story with a painful crush on the husband of her boss, hostess, and friend. And then there's the revelation of a murder (during the robbery that turned up the quilts), plus something very dark in the background of whoever crafted the quilts. Lots of fun detail, and a reasonably satisfactory conclusion too.
