I found this fair-condition softcover among the charity-sale books at a local Hannaford. I've been to the real-world Dogtown, now a series of trails on Cape Ann, and was curious about the book.
It's an atmospheric and poignant look at a handful of residents of the Commons Settlement, as the town was once known, in the waning years of the community. The story darts back and forth, filling in details of relationships, origins, old shames and fears - and, in a few cases, new hopes for the future. Having been to the location I recognized some of the landmarks and was very sympathetic to the idea of the dwindling number of residents coping with harsh weather and other trials - not least the prejudices of the townsfolk in Gloucester, the nearest town of any size.
There are several instances of frustrated love, where for one reason or another the individuals could not be together. There are examples of caring and charity, as the characters look after each other in failing health or other trauma - but there are also examples of cold-heartedness, with some characters sent to a workhouse for lack of anyone to tend to them in better surroundings. Even those few who manage to rise above their harsh beginnings to lead successful lives and, in some cases, start families, have painful recollections of their lives in Dogtown...
