The seventh son of the seventh son, aptly named Septimus Heap, is stolen the night he is born by a midwife who pronounces him dead. That same night, the baby's father, Silas Heap, comes across a bundle in the snow containing a new born girl with violet eyes. The Heaps take this helpless newborn into their home, name her Jenna, and raise her as their own. But who is this mysterious baby girl, and what really happened to their beloved son Septimus?

The first book in this enthralling new series by Angie Sage leads readers on a fantastic journey filled with quirky characters and magykal charms, potions, and spells. Magyk is an original story of lost and rediscovered identities, rich with humor and heart.

I am a huge fan of the fantasy genre, and I had remembered owning Magyk at one point, but for some reason, I gave it away. Re-reading it has reminded me why. As I read through the book for the second time in years, I found its writing too weak. The worldbuilding and action scenes were not clear enough, so I could not easily picture what things looked like or how they acted. (Though I did find the character illustrations helpful for visualizing characters.) And the book's tonal shifts were pretty extreme; the villain was treated like a joke throughout the book, but I was supposed to consider him dangerous. In contrast, some of the other characters were given a bit more depth, and I liked them well enough. However, those likeable characters were not enough to distract me from the book's weak writing. Regardless, I hope my friend who I'm planning to give this book to will enjoy the book more than I did.
