There is one thing about reading a book written in the era it was set, is that you are more likely to get the true atmosphere and attitudes of the time, and so it was with this book.
I enjoyed it more than I expected to and finished reading it on a visit to Tumut, NSW.
It is about Laura, who is sent away to a girls school. She is portrayed as immature as compared to many of her class mates, but this could be because she is younger than many in her class, but then again, it could just be personality. I was trying to work out if she was really as bright as she was meant to be. Apparently she did very well in some classes, as she had a very good memory, but not so well in others, such as maths, that takes an ability to work things out. She was not very good doing this; as she was not very good working out some social things either, which led to her having few friends. I thought the author wrote well in portraying Laura's character. The future was limited for the female students of the time. Basically, for overwhelmingly most, marriage and children.
This is a small, light book, so I might take it to the BC Convention in Oslo, Norway.

This book was published more than 100 years ago, still I enjoyed it more than most of the modern books i read. I found that it was very well written, the description of young Laura makes her come alive, and I feel for her and sympathize with her.
I keep it for now, to share with my own daughter.
