The Accidental Tourist

Anne Tyler is one of my favorite authors and this is one of her best books. Tyler's characters are beautifully fleshed-out, often wonderfully quirky, and so real you swear you can recognize them from your own life. Her stories envelope you, have the ability to sometimes move you to tears, and, at the same time, contain paragraphs that make you laugh out loud. Give this book a try, you won't regret it! Highly recommended.

Mailed today by slow boat (4 to 6 weeks) to MoJeDenUK in England. I am so glad that my book is traveling so far away - I hope it continues it's world-travels forever! It was a pleasure to trade with you MoJeDenUK and I really hope you will discover a new author that you love! Thanks for the trade!
Thanks Libby2. This book was waiting for me when I arrived home from work today. I love the little bookmark and shall use it with the book I am currently reading. Thanks also for the postcard of your hometown.
I look forward to starting this book and shall be sure to journal it once I have read it and then send it on its way. The title of the book almost demands that it travels the world and does not stand on a bookshelf collecting dust!

Finished this book at last. It was an enjoyable read and nice to discover a new author! It's the first book of hers I have read but I do now have a few more TBR, eventually!
Back to the novel, I found the characters quite endearing although I think Muriel would be an acquired taste for any man! I thought her incessant chatter would normally have driven a sane man nuts (it certainly did me!) but it was like water off a duck's back to Macon. He drifted along with the tide and subsequently got sucked into her life. I thought the antics of Edward the dog were a bit superfluous to the story though, but it was the dog that brought the two of them together so he couldn't altogether be ignored.
What also annoyed me was Macon's name!!! It kept distracting me from the story because I didn't know how to pronounce it. Everytime his name came up I was reading Mackon, Masson, Mayson, Maykon. By page 155 I settled for Mayson and once I had settled on my idea of the correct pronunciation I could then fly ahead with the book! Daft I know.
I'll offer this book up as a Bookray. So far I have:
1. Sherri5762 - USA
2. Brujula - France
3. Winterson - UK
4. Molyneux - UK
Finally posted by slow boat on 26/11 to Sherri5762

Rec'd in the mail today. I'll try to read it asap and get it on it's way.
Very fun, very comfortable book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked seeing Macon come alive and start to really see his life. And I loved Edward. LOL. I'll get it out to Brujula as soon as I hear from him/her.

The book arrived safely today. Thank you Sherry 5762 and MoJeDenUK
I liked very much this book. I had seen the movie years ago, and I hadn't really liked it. But Anne Tyler makes her characters appear really human, and you can't help liking them! I almost felt myself living with the Leary family, participating in their endless discussions about tiny details, playing their weird card game...
I mailed the book to Winterson today!

I know I've had this a bit over a month now, but I'm reading it now and absolutely loving it! Will get it done in the next couple of days and journal again and send it to Molyneux.
I really loved this book. The characters were so well drawn that you really can imagine bumping into them in the street. I actually got more annoyed with Macon than Muriel - maybe that says something about my personality!? But only annoyed in the way the book leads you to be. I too loved seeing him come to life and let out the parts of his personality that he had obviously buried because of his mother and Sarah. And who can not love Edward?
I wasn't that keen on the interview with the author at the end of the book, and am glad that I only read the first page of it. Her one sentence answers annoyed me, and I think I'll let the novel speak for itself.
This was the first Anne Tyler novel for me, and I think I'm hooked! I've already got another one added to the tbr mountain!
Sorry it took me so long to finish and journal this book - I've had no internet connection since Thursday - but this book is now on its way to Molyneux.

Thanks Winterson - the book arrived safely last week, sorry I didnt get around to journalling it earlier!
Well I finally got to reading this book & I loved it! It took me a little while to get into it but when I did, it had me laughing outloud - & it's beautifully written.
I've just checked & I'm last on this ray so will take it to the Unconvention tomorrow - unless MoJeDenUK has other plans for it?

Love Anne Tyler, haven't read this one yet!
I discovered this book in my mailbox today. I've never read Anne Tyler, but I have heard wonderful things about her writing. Thanks!
I loved this book! I will definitely be watching for more Anne Tyler novels. Her reputation seems to be fully deserved. I enjoyed watching the little changes in Macon, and waiting for him to notice them himself. My favorite character was probably Edward the dog, though. I know that sounds silly, but I don't often see dogs so well written when they are not a central part of the book.
I am passing this along to the NTCRRS-OBCZ where it will hopefully catch a ride on a train. Happy reading, travellers!
Thank you for the wonderful doantion to the green shelves!
