I was visiting a friend in Ireland and she insisted that I take this book as she knew I would like it.

Both the film, which I saw first, and the book of this true story are phenomenal.

However, it's noteworthy that they are extremely different. The film is all about Philomena's search and her son becomes a will-o'-the-wisp character, so changing the title to 'Philomena' was appropriate. The book (which I was given by someone else and so couldn't choose the edition) is all about him, so it's especially grating that the title has been changed from 'The Lost Child of Philomena Lee' to match that of the film. Worst of all, the cover photograph is ridiculous: actors playing still-living real people, one of whom is not the main character of the book and another who hardly appears at all. (It turns out that the film also made some pointless changes to the pair's path of discovery.)

Most importantly, though, the work must be a wonderful treasure for Philomena, and Sixsmith has done a fantastic job. Do buy or at least read it,just not a film tie-in copy unless you find mine.
