The Private Patient (Adam Dalgliesh Mysteries)
3 journalers for this copy...
When the notorious investigative journalist Rhoda Gradwyn booked into Mr Chandler-Powell's private clinic in Dorset for the removal of a disfiguring and long-standing facial scar, she had every prospect of a successful operation by a distinguished surgeon, a week's peaceful convalescence in one of Dorset's most beautiful manor houses and the beginning of a new life. She was never to leave Cheverell Manor alive. Dalgliesh and his team are called in to investigate the murder, and later a second death, which are to raise even more complicated problems than the question of innocence or guilt.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Au cas où il y aurait un lecteur intéressé.
It seemed to be waiting for me.
Not bad, but the end seems to be too conventional.

I didn't realize when I put this on my wishlist, nor in fact till I was half-way through reading it, that this is in fact the final installment in the Adam Dalgliesh series of books. Not that I mind - in a series like this I don't feel it too important to read perfectly in order, though others might feel differently. The article linked to below is a pretty interesting comparison between this book and the first in the series, which I've not read, as well as other details about the author's life that I enjoyed.

It took me a while to get into this; it's written very well, but it's very detailed. Each character is given tremendous amounts of backstory and inner thoughts, there's detailed descriptions of each room you enter, and so on. Sometimes this is really helpful and necessary but sometimes it feels like it slows down the reading pace, when I just wanted to know What Happened. But the way the different threads were drawn together were interesting, and I liked the resolution provided for even for minor characters. I was a little surprised that in a book so detailed and procedural, some of the solution would rest on, essentially, luck (the 7/7 incidents, etc) but that is a minor quibble. All in all, it's a book I enjoyed and I would certainly seek out more books from P. D. James, though perhaps not when I want a fast read.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I stopped in here to pick up a sandwich to eat later at my desk for lunch (their smoked chicken sandwich has pickled onions in it and is just fantastic, btw!) and while waiting for it to get made I left this book on the shelf with other books, newspapers, and magazines. It's on the left when you enter the tiny shop, behind the small table there. Happy travels, book!
