Forgot my book for the book swap game so I've picked this as it's a book I enjoyed and I love Nigel Slater.

Toast is Nigel Slater's award-winning story of a childhood remember through food. Whether relating his mother's burning of toast, his father's dearded Boxing Day stew or such culinary highlights of the day as Arctic Roll and Grilled Grapefruit (then considered something of a status symbol in Wolverhampton), this remarkable memoir vividly recreates daily life in sixties suburban England. Nigel's likes and dislikes, aversions and sweet-toothed weaknesses form a fascinating backdrop to this incredibly moving and deliciously evocative portrait of childhood, adolescence and sexual awakening.

This is quite an amazing story. I was surprised at the number of sexual references from quite a young age. But it didn't surprise me that he was in search of good food judging by what he was served at home. His childhood seemed incredibly lonely and it appeared that decisions where made with no consideration to his feelings or how it would affect him.

Years ago I won lunch at his North London flat cooked by Nigel Slater and shall never forget both the food and meeting so charming and unpretentious a young man. The conversation led to his answering questions about his early life and first cooking experiences. I was delighted when 'Toast' came out in 2003, bought myself a copy and gave more as much appreciated presents.
When World Book Night began I applied to be sent books to give away and happily got my first choice of 'Toast'. Again I got feedback from people who had enjoyed it and have since always had at least one copy in the house.
Today at Birmingham UnCon I played the Bookswap game organised by Weebly. I asked Earthcaroleanne to reveal her wrapped book - and what else could it have been?! 'Toast'! Tomorrow it will be moving on again to a new custodian!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Going into the Little Library for someone else to discover and enjoy! As far as I know there are two Little Libraries in Birmingham. This one is a small, ivy draped cupboard in a front garden. I'll put it there while on my way to meet other BookCrossers at The British Oak for lunch.
Thanks, Earthcaroleanne, I love this book and it's good to be able to pass it on again!
