Katie Chandler’s life is pure magic–literally. As an executive assistant at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., she’s seen more than her share of fantastical occurrences. A mere Manhattan mortal, Katie is no wizard, but she’s a wiz at exposing “hokum” pocus, cloaked lies, and deceptive enchantments. And she’s fallen under the all-too-human spell of attraction to Owen, a hunky wizard and coworker. Owen, however, is preoccupied. Someone has broken into his office and disrupted top-secret files, and it reeks of an inside job. CEO Merlin (yes, the Merlin) taps Katie and her special ability to uncover the magical mole.
Keeping her feelings in check while sleuthing alongside Owen, Katie is shocked to discover that her immunity to magic is waning, putting her in grave danger. Soon she’s surrendering to the charms and enchantments of everyone and everything around her, including a killer pair of red stilettos. Katie must now conjure up her natural instincts to get to the bottom of the break-in, regain her power, and win the wizard of her dreams.

Disappointing, and I'm only marking this as high as five, because I have a weakness for some fantasy stories. Katie is the main character. She is not very bright, slow to ask for help when she so obviously needs it (another sign of low intelligence) and even when the obvious is pointed out, she takes some time to realise. I was way ahead of Katie, which is bad writing. Most things were in your face obvious, but could dumb Katie work it out...no. The shoes, even though she worked around magic, no...the water (it tasted funny)...no. It was said in the story that Katie is bright. This is not the first story to make that claim about the main character, but then show them by their actions and thoughts as being not bright. It takes more than saying a character is bright; it must be shown too, and this story showed the opposite, that Katie was not bright. Re the water, it would have taken a lot of whatever drug to drug the whole apartment building. Water is not only used for drinking, but washing clothes and showering, so I'm not so sure how easy that would be to do. Then her mother didn't drink the tap water it seems, which seems very strange. There was no bottled water in the house by admittance, so she must only drink soft drinks. She was shown getting one from the fridge. What a dentist bill she must have, and no comment was made to her large size; surveys showing that drinking high amounts of soft drinks being a good indication of being fat.
Then there was the constant reference to Katie's thoughts about how gorgeous Owen was. Okay, we got it early on, he's good looking and Katie is besotted with him. No need to keep up this constant reminder of this. Then they both can't see the other likes them, especially Katie, after he takes her to dinner and the like. Eye rolling.
Would have been better with more realistic writing and characters.

Released in 'Some Café', Collector, NSW. There was a pumpkin and I thought this book with the heroine holding a wand, fitted in. The pumpkin looked suitable for Cinderella's coach.
