I really enjoyed this book for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's very funny in a harmless, playful kind of a way. And secondly, it's very well written. I've read other Steinbeck books before, and they've all been good. This one is probably the best so far. I hadn't read Cannery Row, to which this is a sequel, more or less, but I don't think that detracts from it; it just uses the same characters and locations. Just the chapter titles are fabulous - "There is a Hole in Reality Through Which we can Look if we Wish", "Il n'y a pas de Mouches sur la Grand-mère", and so on. My favourite quote from it has to be "Velella in their purple billions sailed into Monterey Bay". For that phrase alone, this book is highly recommended.
I loved this book! It was hilarious- the writing style is very funny and the characters are described so skillfully that you can clearly imagine them, as unreal as they are. They are all very funny and loveable, even the ones who are supposed to be "bad"! So yeah, it was great! I should like to read all of his books. I had forgotten that this was a sequel to another book, which is good because I thought the characters and the place would do well to have more stories written about them.
Thank you very much Flares for this other great book too!!! Hope you'll receive my package soon!
I loved this book too!!! It's been my morning indulgence on the way from home to university and it really kept me good company!! You end up identifying yourself with one of the characters and trying to figure out what you'd do if you were him/her!!!!
