A friend brought this book to my attention by sharing a link to a newspaper story that it had just won the 2016 Tiptree Award (https://tiptree.org/). So then I had the fun of discovering a really interesting new (to me) Minneapolis writer.

This features an imaginative and well-constructed future world, and a believable and passionate young woman trying to remain true to her values. Unlike a lot of YA novels, this book manages to avoid good vs. evil stereotypes as characters. Even the worst one, the camp director, turns out to have some reasons for sympathy.

But that's just one person's opinion. Future readers, what do YOU think of this book?

What a lovely day! We had our August BookCrossing meeting at the park. Perfect weather. Yummy food. And new BookCrossing friends to meet face to face. And to top it off this book! It looks intriguing in and of itself. I can hardly wait to read it and add it to Little Free Library #2873 to tempt the young adults who so kindly donate their books. But I also discovered a new to me book award, The Tiptree Awards which this book won. How exciting. Thanks Judy!

I enjoyed this YA dystopian story a lot. Although I did have to first simply accept some things. For example, assuming this takes place sometime in the future, I had a hard time believing and wondered how it could have come to be that there would be a society so rigidly adhering to the male/female dichotomy. And indeed there were a lot of either/or choices that our protagonist, fifteen year-old Kivali, was being expected to make in order to become a responsible (compliant) adult, none of which were entirely attractive to them. Boy or girl? Commit or Blight? Like or fear? Lizard or human? This is a story of discovering who you really are and being comfortable with that.

I loved the creativity of the lizard fantasy. An entertaining read.
