I really enjoyed this book, which has quite understandably been a huge hit all over the world.

The main character, Precious Ramotswe is extremely likeable and engaging, the cases she gets involved with are very varied and there is a nice mixture of light and shade.

The Botswana setting is stunning, and the author obviously has a deep love for Africa, and his descriptions of the country and its people are wonderful.

My only criticism, which is only a minor niggle, is that the novel is perhaps a little TOO simply crafted - I wasn't sure at the beginning whether it was in fact a book aimed at older childern.

This was a sweet book. Precious was a very lovable character and her various adventures as a detective are rewarding, but I'll have to agree with arturogrande that they also seem almost too simple for the adult reader. Still, a nice, light read.

I'm waiting for an address to send this on, so it'll be in the mail as soon as possible. Thanks for sharing!

Finished today.

This book was...okay. It was a nice, light read. Not overly deep or heavy, certainly. I could have done with more about Mma Ramotswe's cases and less background plot. Some of it really added to the book and some of it didn't. I thought the background information necessitated too much jumping back and forth from the past to the present, which sometimes made the book choppy.

I picked up this book knowing absolutely nothing about Botswana, and I was happy to learn something about it, but I did become a little tired of reading about how perfect it was. I also grew weary of the opining about how the younger generation didn't know how to use their perfect Botswana manners and knew nothing of the old ways, blah blah. Additionally, I didn't find the American bashing very funny, really. Not everyone in the Western world is shallow, selfish, and banal.

In fact, after reading many pages of the author lauding the integrity and dignity of Botswanans, with Precious Ramotswe as a poster child for those attributes, I was appalled that she would cold-heartedly decide with her doctor friend to just let the South Africans deal with the problem of a fraudulent doctor practicing in the hospital. The message that put forth was: "Well, Botswana is perfect and beautiful in every way. South Africa is nowhere near our standards of wonderfulness. Why don't we just let them deal with that dirty little matter so that we don't have to damage our glowing reputation, and everyone can just go on being impressed by our pristineness?" Bleah. Is that the Botswanan style of integrity? The hyprocrisy stuns me. It's unfortunate, but that one chapter really reduced the whole novel's value in my eyes.

I will be passing this on to Macdonv shortly.

8 out of 10

This was a perfectly light, benign read. Arturogrande was right - one of the draws to McCall Smith's writing style is that it is not overly complex, but I was constantly aware that the narrative was *very* simple.

I did however, like the various quirks of the characters, like Mr JLB Matekoni is only referred to as Mr JLB Matekoni - even though Precious Ramotswe and he have a close enough relationship for him to keep proposing marriage.

I found the relating of her various cases to be kind of glossed over, but then, the cases aren't really the focus of the story, are they? It's really about Precious Ramotswe and what happens in her life, and how she sees things.

My only complaint - the author assumes we all know how to pronounce some of the short forms. I know that Mme is short for Madame, but what the heck does Mma stand for, and how am I supposed to pronounce it??
The same goes for Rra - ???

All in all, a very quick, pleasant, nonoffensive story. Now it's off to goatgrrl to enjoy.

The No. 1 Ladies just arrived in yesterday's mail -- thanks very much, arturogrande and macdonv! I'll start this just as soon as I've finished the book I'm reading right now, and promise to have it back in the mail by the end of the month (probably long before that, actually). (Photo at left: pumpkins in the Byward Market in Ottawa last week.)

I started reading this book late last night, and so far I'm really enjoying it -- much more than I thought I would, actually, given earlier comments about the language being simplistic (it just goes to show you that in writing -- as elsewhere -- sometimes less is more!).

I found this article about author Alexander McCall Smith (left) in the Guardian's online edition.

In the final analysis, I find I have such mixed feelings about this book! On the one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed the sweet, simple tale of Precious Rambotswe and her efforts to do the right thing for the Batswana. I liked Mma Rambotswe’s crisp, straightforward morality, made all the more human by her occasional lapses -- like when she insists the only reason she raised the matter of her fee with her Daddy’s former physician was to advise him there "wouldn’t be any fee". I got a kick out of Precious’ digs at men (particularly bearing in mind she is the creation of a male author), and I loved how unashamed she is about her size ("they are nice blouses … and I hope you sell them to some nice small person"). So at one level, I enjoyed just relaxing my mind and soaking up this gentle story.

But.

From a more critical perspective, I feel concerned about the wildly sanitized version of life in contemporary Africa depicted in this series. The Africa of No. 1 Ladies is a place seemingly untouched by hunger, AIDS, tribalism and genocide. It’s Afro-Disney. Sure, McCall Smith has argued (see the article linked from my last journal entry) that "those who portray an aggressive, vulgar, debased attitude towards life are conniving in that life". But it may also be argued that those who promulgate a sanitized and rose-tinted version of reality are participating in a kind of deceit. As much as I enjoyed No. 1 Ladies, I must ultimately conclude that I like my fiction a little less watered down.

Sleone and jendudley asked to be skipped, since they have already read this book, and I was unable to contact digitaltempest (no response over 4 - 5 days). I'll be mailing the book to tantan in Queensland, Australia on Monday, October 25, 04. Of course it goes without saying, arturogrande, that I appreciate you sharing this book! Thanks very much, as always.

What a lovely story! Certainly, I'm not sure that Precious Ramotswe's Botswana is the real Botswana, but this is fiction, and I believe it does the job. A light, lovely read, and I'm looking forward to reading more of Precious' adventures.

This book is finally home after a worldwide trip which has taken more than a year.
Thanks everyone for making this a great bookring.
I've just started a new ring for the second book in the series, Tears of the Giraffe. If you would like to take part, please PM me with your shipping preferences - you are all welcome.
Thanks for the lollies, quizgirl, and the postcard. I don't know whether you chose the card on purpose, but the funny thing is that although the book has been around Europe, North America and Australia, it makes it back home to me containing a postcard from Twycross Zoo - which is just five miles away from where I live!

Re arturogrande's comment on the postcard I sent to her, I wish I were that clever. It never occurred to me that she lives just down the road from the zoo. I just picked one with a nice picture (of a chimp) which I hoped she'd like!
I'm very fond of Twycross Zoo and have been there many times over the years. It is very famous for its work with breeding chimps.

I might take the kids there for a day out this summer.

That's the serendipity of Bookcrossing! I too love chimps - they are wonderful, intelligent creatures and Twycross is a lovely zoo. Thanks again, quizgirl.
