I got this fair-condition ex-library hardcover from Better World Books. It's by the author of Annihilation, a very weird book indeed, so I look forward to seeing where this one goes.

Later: Well, I can usually make my way through some pretty twisty and surreal storylines, but this one lost me. I found that I was more interested in some of the quotes from other (fictional) works - the history of Ambergris, etc. - at the chapter headings than in the story that followed, and I couldn't get attached to the characters at all. But perhaps someone else will enjoy it!
