Elizabeth is Missing

Maud is forgetful. She makes a cup of tea and doesn't remember to drink it.
She sometimes thinks her daughter Helen is a total stranger. But there's one thing Maud is sure of: Her friend Elizabeth is missing. The note in her pocket tells her so. And no matter who tells her to stop going on about it, Maud will get to the bottom of it.

I found this to be an entertaining & compelling read but very unsettling. Maud is suffering from dementia, living in the past & her story is both heart-breaking yet darkly comic - I often found myself smiling at Maud's actions but then feeling slightly ashamed that I was finding it amusing. It's certainly no laughing matter to Maud, her daughter who's trying to keep her mother safe while unable to watch her 24 hours, & to the various people Maud hounds in her quest to find the missing Elizabeth.
I finished it a few days ago & a part of me still can't help feel relieved to think, that having already lost my dear parents, this is not something I will have to help them through. Very selfish of me I know but there it is & I applaud all of you out there caring for a loved one suffering from this awful disease.
Definitely a book that will make you think about the elderly & getting old.
