WILD RELEASE NOTES:
To be released at local bookcrossing Saturday meeting.
Picked up at the meetup. Looks interesting!
Wow! I'd never heard about this at all; there was even a TV movie (under a different title, which contains a spoiler) about this tragedy. It was a riveting read!
Despite knowing the outcome (more or less), I just couldn't put the book down. So many things could have prevented the tragedy. A sobering tale about arrogance, carelessness, and ignoring one's intuition.
After reading it, I did some internet research and turned up even more sad news. Some people just can’t catch a break.
Highly recommended for those who like real-life adventures, happy ending or not.
To avoid spoilers, don’t read the blurb or dust jacket, and don’t select the following Amazon description: 😊
One late summer's day, the yacht Trashman set sail from Annapolis to Florida. On board were five young people: John, the captain; Meg, Mark, Brad, and Debbie Scaling. When the boat sailed into a gale, the eighty-knot winds shredded the sails. Forty-foot seas crashed through the cabin windows, and Trashman sank, leaving the crew adrift in a rubber dinghy. Albatross tells the story of how Debbie and Brad survived and how the tragedy changed Debbie Scaling's life forever.
Reserved for booklady331's Nonfiction VBB.

Hardcover with dust jacket and lovely hand-written registration information inside; received on August 1 as part of booklady331's nonfiction VBB.
I'm almost certain that Scaling Kiley's story is one of those covered in Laurence Gonzales's fascinating Deep Survival, so I'm not too concerned about spoilers - but I am interested in learning more about her ordeal.

Promised as a wishlist tag on June 8.
I did read this before sending it out, but can't add much to eponine38's journal entry, especially: "A sobering tale about arrogance, carelessness, and ignoring one's intuition."
I have to admit to skimming lightly over some of the sailing details, since that’s a language I don’t speak...

Thanks so much for sending this my way. I haven't read a survival-at-sea story in a while!
I almost couldn't put this book down. I know nothing about sailing, so the technical parts of what was happening were lost on me, but I could picture it. And I could feel the author's angst toward Mark; I work with an annoying man like this. I think I would have pushed him overboard.
What was really interesting to me was how similar this experience was to the situation in the book "Not Without Hope" about 4 football players whose boat capsized 35 miles off the coast of Florida. Their struggle for survival while they awaited rescue was so much like this one: the thirst, the desperation, the physical agony, the madness that set in, and the people who went off into the sea in their delusion and quickly drowned. It makes me think that this is the set order for how a situation like this unfolds. It makes me wonder how long I'd survive?
Now I want another survival story to read!
