The Cellist of Sarajevo
8 journalers for this copy...
It has been a very long time since I have been totally engrossed by a novel, finished reading it in just over 24 hours, given it a rating of 10 AND considered buying extra copies of a book to share in a book ring.
I have the original copy that I will take with me to the Calgary Bookcrossing meetup, and I will pick up another copy for an international book ring.
It looks like it is safe to send this book ring out now, I haven't heard anything else about the Canada Post lockout.
Welcome everyone! Here is the final order of the book ring, please let me know if there is any problem. Surface mail is fine if you have to send it that way.

OK, I've now read this, & a non-BookCrossing friend has read it.
I'm old enough to remember the Winter Olympics that were held at Sarajevo. To think about the terrible things that happened there afterwards is hard, especially when you can put a picture to the place in your mind. Makes it all the more real.
I always like reading about other people's thoughts & motivations. Guess I like trying to understand what makes them do the things they do. Of course, I don't always understand why I do the things I do, but that's another story...
I have to say, I didn't entirely agree with some of the conclusions the author made at the end. And I didn't care for the end of Arrow's story. I get it. But I didn't like it.
Anyway, I'll be interested to hear what everyone else has to say. I'll be sending this off to valpete this week.
Thanks for including me in this ring!

Thanks for sending this along to me. I do have a few before this one. Please PM me if I'm taking too long.
Excellent book! Well written! It's heartbreaking and beautiful in equal measures.
Sending it along to the next reader on the list.

Arrived safely with me, thanks :)
To my shame I know very little about the Bosnian war (which happened only 20 years ago) and after finishing this I feel like I should seek out some more books on the topic. This is the story of three Sarajevans going about their everyday life in very out of the ordinary situations. Arrow is a sniper who hates "the men on the hills" and is tasked with protecting The Cellist from enemy fire, Kenan is walking through a ruined city in search of water for his family and elderly neighbour and Dragan is on his way to work for a loaf of bread. Each has a very different experience in the city under siege and each story concludes with a slightly different message.
I did really enjoy this book, it is very uniquely told and will haunt me for a long time. In particular I found Dragan and Kenan's stories of moving through the city particularly harrowing. In my life I have never had to wonder if I am in the sights of an enemy sniper and I hope that I will never have to.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
On it's way to the next reader, I hope you enjoy it too, safe travels!
Received with thanks! I have another BR book before this, but should not take too long.
This was sombre reading. I imagine it captures perfectly the oppressive mentality of Sarajevo under siege. I liked Arrow most of the three protagonists. I was relieved when I finished though, as this is not happy reading. Thank you for sharing.

The book arrived today. Thank you!
Well written and touching.

Thanks very much for sending me this book. It arrived in yesterday's mail.
I'm a slow reader! I'll make The Cellist my next book. It sounds like the story is so captivating, it may not take me long to read it. But please don't be afraid to give me a nudge if I'm delaying too long.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
This book circulated among members of my book club. They didn't like it as much as I did, sadly. They found it to be depressing and frightening. I found it to be a tribute to resilience, and basic humanity and decency in the face of terrible evil.
Catch this book soon in the barn-shaped Little Free Library on Schneider Drive, and let us know what *you* think.
