How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else
2 journalers for this copy...
I read this in a day. I thought the author was pretty pompous. Throughout the entire book, he portrays himself as apart from someone who would work at Starbucks, as though it's clearly beneath him but he likes it anyway. Like he's slumming it. Still, I felt compelled to keep reading.
I was very interested in his remorse for how he'd hurt his family. I'm in a similar position as his wife and wonder whether my ex will ever realize all the damage he did.
But more than that, Gill offered me a mantra to cling to that he uses, too: Less past, More future.
I like that.

Adding this to the Many, Many Memoirs box. Enjoy!
Picked up from the Memoir bookbox. Looks interesting. Thanks for sharing!
his book is an easy read, and I suppose I enjoy it more than average because of my experience. While I was not fired at work, I made a conscious decision to make a U turn and settle in a retail job whose seems way below my education level and expected pay. I have to admit that I enjoy it more than my previous 9-5 jobs, even though initially I went through the same embarrassment of being seen by acquaintances. However, I was never "elite" as he was, nor did I "scope so low" as to clean toilets, so the author really has my admiration for being able to do that.
One "pearl of wisdom" I walk away with from this book is: "You can't serve if you try to control people you serve". Not just in service industry, but I would say you can substitute the word "serve" and make this sentence apply to many situations.

Putting into the food bookbox. Happy travel!
