I'm not a fan of the horror genre at all, so it was with some trepidation I picked up this book. I need not have worried - I was hooked from the first page. The horror is more in the build up rather than gore and gruesomeness ... and that is the power of the book.

The book is a series of interlocking stories - so far, so David Mitchell. But for once, the structure is straightforward and linear and this is - with the exception of Black Swan Green - probably the easiest read of Mitchell's work. However, simple doesn't mean banal, and the book is beautifully written, at times heartbreakingly sad and at others laugh out loud funny.

Even though each individual story is brief (around 50 or so pages), Mitchell draws his characters so well that you are there, by their sides, as they venture into Slade House. At times, I had my hand to my mouth as I was so rooting for the protagonists, hoping that they would overcome "the baddies."

Having not read The Bone Clocks, I did feel I had missed something, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the book as a whole - and I will certainly be getting hold of a copy of the earlier book.

Mitchell manages to be both popular with the public, and popular with the literary critics. I don't see this book lessening his reputation with either.
