Another superbly written mystery from the wonderful Ms Walters.
Mike Deacon is an investigative journalist who gets his teeth into the story of a London tramp found dead in a posh bird's garage on the Isle of Dogs.
Known only by the name Billy Blake who liked to quote poetry from his namesake William, the tramp is actually only 42 but looks 62.
Deacon is brought into close contact with the derelicts and down-and-outs of London's Thames area, one of whom he befriends, and who gives him a lot of information about Billy . . . but is it all genuine?
I normally don't like "scrapbook" type novels, with letters and press cuttings etc dotted about, and in this case I wish I'd paid more attention to them - I was a bit confused towards the end by who was who and who did what - however, I couldn't put it down, and well worth a read whether you're a fan or not!

This is the first time I've read anything by Walters - well, with the exception of the short read "Chickenfeed" a few years back - & I was pleasantly surprised by it. It was a bit of a convoluted plot with the death of a homeless person causing the life of a wealthy woman to be bought under scrutiny by a journalist. Throw in a few missing people suspected of various crimes, along with some assumed identities & it made for an entertaining & gripping enough tale, albeit that it relies on a couple of coincidences to tie things up not overly tidily at the end.
I particularly liked journalist Mike Deacon, who I felt had the feel of an already well established character, as if I was reading one of a series featuring him not a standalone novel. Despite his history of dysfunctional relationships, he seemed happy to adopt the waifs & strays (though not sure Barry really merits that description!) that came across his path. A believable character...Terry maybe a little less so. Terry, a homeless boy fourteen-years-old-going-on-forty, is a bit of an enigma. Wise beyond his years at times, he can seemingly recall poetry & rhetoric recited by Billy verbatim, soaks up knowledge like a sponge & yet apparently can neither read nor write...still he makes a good sparring partner for Mike.
It just fails to gain top marks from me as the reason for Verity's death & Billy's obsession with redemption didn't have me wholly convinced. On the whole though a really good read & I certainly won't shy away from looking up more of this author's back catalogue.
