So Vast the Prison: A Novel

This novel is both very specific to the culture in which it is set (Algeria) and universal in its examination of the interior lives of oppressed women. Time is extremely fluid; the narrative moves between the ancient and the contemporary and the narrative voice shifts accordingly. This is not an easy read, but it is an extremely rewarding one, especially if your knowledge of Algeria is as sparse as mine was.
