"The enduring qualities of Spain, an immemorial place like place like no other in the world, has made it James Michener's second home. Here, in the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated Spain of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards; he also shares the intimate, often hidden Spain he has come to know, where toiling peasants and their honest food, the salt of the shores and the oranges of the inland fields, the congeniality of living souls and the dark weight of history conspire to create a wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful land, the mystery called Iberia."

Vielen Dank für das Trostbuch!
Ich habe vor einiger Zeit "Die Kinder von Torremolinos" vom selben Autor gelesen und als recht gut in Erinnerung. Bin also mal gespannt auf dieses Buch.

First thing, that has to be said about this book, is, that it's long. Maybe a little too long for my taste. To read over 900 pages, even though there are a lot of pictures, can be at some parts boring.
The second thing is, that it is old: over 50 years. The Spain described here does not longer exist - and the author in his tastes (bull fights) and in his historical judgements (Reconquista and Conquista) seems often outdated.
But nevertheless it is a very good book: An interesting mixture from personal travel anecdotes, description of art, talks with interesting people and historic outlines. Not everything is equally interesting: there are lengthy descriptions of artworksand some repetitions of thoghts. - But over all it was a good read.
