I found this good-condition hardcover at a local Savers thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy of this cute/macabre cookbook.
Some of the recipes are trickier than others. The "Day of the Dead" cakes are very cute, but to make them you have to sculpt skulls out of chocolate cupcakes, cover them with fondant, and then decorate them, all a bit much for me. But the "Monstrous Mummies" option is simpler: just pipe ribbons of white frosting on chocolate cupcakes to look like wrappings, leaving a small hole in the middle; then pipe a pair of red eyes peeping out of the hole.
Not all of the cupcakes are macabre; the "Zombie's Breakfast" option is actually an amusing concoction, using a spice-cake recipe for the cupcakes, frosted to look like there are fried eggs on top, and with bits of bacon candied in maple syrup as garnishes.
Among the more dramatic options: "Shattered Glass", with shards of sugar-syrup "glass" pressed into the frosted cupcakes, and dark red cherry sauce added to look like blood. "Sweeney Todd's Surprise" features a cupcake frosted to look like a meat pie, with a marzipan thumb sticking out of the top (I loved that one!).
There are recipes for meringue bones, a simple procedure: just whip up the meringue and pipe it into bone shapes before cooking/drying. (The addition of cherry or raspberry sauce makes 'em nice and bloody.)
One of the more obviously-zombie-themed options: a red velvet cupcake that's frosted by piping pink frosting in whorls, to simulate the creases of a brain. Looks very simple, and should make those cries of "Braaiinnnnss!!!" make more sense!
